Thrilla' In Manila

In Contenders' Thrilla design, Contenders pays homage to the third and final fight between Ali and Joe Frazier that took place on October 1, 1975 in at the Philippine Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City, Philippines, regarded by many as the best fight of all time. Dubbed "Thrilla in Manila"because Ali declared that the fight would be "a killa and a thrilla and a chilla, when I get that gorilla in Manila". Thrilla takes inspiration from the fight poster art and the official onsite pennant as well as an incredible image of Ali striking Frazier during the fight.

We wanted to capture the the battle that made this fight the show it turned out to be. Being the third and final fight between these two warriors, both of these men left everything in the ring. The fight, scheduled for 15 rounds, was a battle of endurance and very well could have been stopped.

The conditions were brutal and the arena felt like a sauna, it was incredibly hot. The fight itself felt a bit dark and somber at points and this was our foundation in tone when bringing this design to life. Taking some cues from fight posters and memorabilia leading up to the fight, we wanted infuse this boxer brief with the feelings of the long hard fought struggle - and then, come out on the other side appearing even more golden than before.
